Chapter 11
âTomorrow is the big day.â
Winnie places the evening special in front of me. Itâs Weinerschnitzel. Iâve tried this traditional German dish before, but it has been a while. I taste the mashed potatoes first. Theyâre smooth and creamy, especially paired with a bite of red cabbage.
âSo it is,â I answer in between bites. I take a sip of water. No Delford special for me tonight. âI have to say, Winnie, Iâm impressed.â
âAre you saying youâre surprised I can cook?â She laughs and places her hands on her petite hips. Sheâs wearing the same powder blue eye shadow and long-sleeved shirt with the restaurantâs logo on the front. Her short hair is sleek around the sides of her face but there is a mess of frizzy hair when she turns around.
âIâm saying well done.â I speak louder than I usually do to make sure she hears me over the chatter and the Christmas music. âIt tastes great.â I glance down at Pudding as she patiently wags her tail. Her leash is tied to my chair. Winnie didnât mind me bringing her inside since thereâs an extra chill outside.
âThat means a lot coming from the future winner of the Gingerbread Festivalâs confections contest.â
âItâs not over until the gingerbread man breakdances, Winnie.â I knock on the wooden counter for good luck. âI hear there are lots of entries this year. Businesses from neighboring towns even.â
âDonât you worry about any of them,â she reassures me. âA local is bound to win it.â She glances at the time and rolls her eyes. âI swear that girl of mine would lose her head if it wasnât screwed on. Sheâs late again. Probably parading around the festival with her friends from school.â
âI had a waitressing job once when I was her age,â I comment, taking large bite of sauerkraut.
âYou can make big tips if you know what youâre doing.â Winnie nods.
âSome people can, but I was absolutely terrible at it,â I reply.
Winnie laughs. âWell, my Rowena is cut out for it. Sheâs quite the charmer just like her father, unfortunately.â
âMaybe I can borrow some of that charm for tomorrow night,â I joke.
âI donât know. You looked like you were doing just fine last time you were here.â She leans in a little closer, raising her eyebrows. I pause, curling my toes in my shoes. Sheâs about to ask about Brant. Iâm sure our recent date is the prime topic of conversation this week.
âItâs possible that I was,â I reply. âWho really knows, though?â
âBut you like him, donât you?â
âI donât plan on breaking his heart if thatâs what youâre asking.â I play with my mashed potatoes. I never intended to dive right into the local scene. I also never intended to catch the eye of Buttercup Ridgeâs most cherished eligible bachelor.
âThatâs your business,â Winnie remarks. âI just want to see him have fun for a change. Weâll be sad to see you go next week.â
âDonât be sad just yet.â I slice into my fried pork cutlet. âMy time here has only really just begun.
